One of the things you must do for the best life is to decide what you want. Indecision is a disease we must cure in order to make measurable progress in reasonable time. If you rule out a malfunction of a part of the brain (prefrontal cortex) responsible for decision making, in which case a person is unable to make a decision even after a thorough analysis, any acts of indecision emanate from the mind. This makes indecision curable. The solution is to be exposed to the right kind of information, which I hope this article will achieve.
Getting to know what we want is something many people don’t ordinarily undertake because it requires serious thinking. Without engaging in the required critical thinking, most people resign to presumptions about what they want. The entire advertising industry thrives on this human presumption. The success of the industry is a proof that people’s wants aren’t based on any deep thinking and as a result they can easily be influenced.
To decide what you want, you begin with the end in mind. It is generally accepted that every normal human being’s ultimate desire is to be happy. That being the case, making up your mind about what you want should begin with what makes you happy. This is not what makes your friends, relatives or spouse happy? The reason many people are dissatisfied even after getting what they wanted is because what they wanted was somebody else’s idea. Since the object of their desire wasn’t intrinsically arrived at, its acquisition makes no sense at the emotional level hence it doesn’t bring satisfaction.
Be aware of the possibilities
Being aware of the possibilities is crucial to deciding what you want. Sometimes we are unable to lay our hands on what will make us happy. Attending seminars, workshops, reading books and having a mentor may provide the answers when you face a fork-in-the-road situation regarding what you want. When you become aware of what others have accomplished, it opens up your mind to the possibilities. It’s not for you to pursue same goals others are pursuing but it gives you a broad view of what is possible. With this awareness, your mind can go to work on what’s possible for you. Usually, our knowledge of possibilities expands in direct proportion to our life experiences.
Real life Experience
I had an experience in my local church that underscores the importance of knowing what one wants. Towards the end of the church service one Sunday afternoon, the preacher made an altar call (an invitation to those that want to give their lives to Jesus Christ). After some people came out, the preacher asked them one after the other for the persons that brought them to church. By the time he got to the last person, it became obvious that over eighty percent of those that answered the altar call were invited by a young man in the congregation. The preacher was so impressed with the young man that he called him out and asked him: “What do you want God to do for you?” To everyone’s surprise, the young man went dumb! The preacher repeated his question and still got no response from the young man. You could see that he was trying to say something but he didn’t know what to say. At a point, some members of the congregation, who knew the implication of such a missed opportunity, tried to help him out by suggesting what he should say! It was a case of being given a blank bank cheque and you are unable to write. Eventually the preacher let him go but not without pointing out that we had just seen how people miss out in life.
Just before you judge the young man, I should let you know that I asked myself the same question the preacher asked him. I must confess that I wasn’t impressed with my response either. Why? I couldn’t articulate what I wanted in one sentence. Thereafter I started refining what I want in life just in case God or any of His servants asks me what I want in future. I advise you to make sure you’re able to say what you want in life in one sentence too. You never know when someone who has what you want will ask you what you want.
Know who you are
Your real wants always tie with who you are. If you don’t know who you are, your perception of what you want will almost always be wrong. Self-knowledge is an important quality if you want to live a happy life. Someone said, “To thyself, be true.” That’s probably the best advice you will ever get if you desire happiness. However, you can only be true to yourself to the extent that you know who you are. You start this journey of self-knowledge by coming to terms with your values (beliefs). After identifying your values, you then ask yourself some probing questions. For instance, what gets your adrenaline pumping? The knowledge of what gets you turned on or off is vital to deciding what you want.
You should also avail yourself the opportunities for self-discovery offered by personality tests that are available on the internet. Most of them take only few minutes to complete. You will be amazed at how accurate some of them can be in describing your personality. Putting all these together enables you achieve harmonious success that will guarantee your happiness.
Why it is important to know what you want
Without the knowledge of what you want, you become a wandering generality that majority of people are. Your wants define everything you do. So if you don’t know what you want, it means you’re wasting your time and, invariably, your life. Perhaps the most important reason for knowing what you want is because it’s the ingredient for getting what you want. Someone said: “It’s certain you will miss 100% of the shots you never take.” Not knowing what you want makes it a certainty that you will lose the excitement that being an active player in the game of life engenders.
I am asking you to decide what you want in life. When you do, you will be astonished by the progress you will make in the days, weeks and months to come.
